A preliminary inspection from a biological anthropologist has indicated that the remains found on Wednesday by an excavation crew near Memorial Bridge in Lewiston to be human, according to the latest update provided by the City of Lewiston Police Department.Â
Based on the anthropologist’s findings, it was determined that there was nothing medicolegal found, and the remains are believed to potentially be ancestral remains.
The Nez Perce Tribe will continue the handling of this case and decision-making on how to proceed with the remains and the scene of their discovery.

LEWISTON – Lewiston Police have been on scene near the Memorial Bridge in North Lewiston investigating after an excavation crew reportedly discovered a skull and bones Wednesday morning.
The excavation crew reportedly halted their work immediately and will not continue while the area is under investigation. At the time of this writing, the type of remains are unknown.Â
A large police presence can be seen in the area near the Pepsi Park Little League Baseball field in North Lewiston on the west side of the bridge.Â
