LEWISTON - Lewis-Clark State's Damek Mitchell can add one more award to his crowded trophy case. On Thursday, June 10, the most decorated Warrior in LC State Men’s Basketball history was named the Cascade Conference Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Male Athlete of the Year. The award is the CCC’s top athletic honor selected by the conference’s athletic directors.
“What an honor for Damek,” Head Coach Austin Johnson said. “In our first year in the Cascade, which is filled with tremendous student-athletes, it’s such an honor for him to win this award. He has been a winner and unbelievable teammate throughout his career and exemplifies what being a competitor is all about. I’m so happy for him and am thankful I had a front row seat to witness him work.”
Mitchell, who was named to the prestigious NABC All-America team this season, is a three-time NAIA All-American, and was named to the first team for the first time in his career this year. He was a Third-Team All-American last season and Honorable Mention as a sophomore. The Cascade Conference Player of Year was also named to the All-National Tournament Team.
Mitchell led LC State in assists (111) and steals (35) this season while averaging 15 points per game. The guard grabbed six rebounds per game and shot 44.9 percent from the floor and 40.1 percent from 3 while making 81.8 percent of his free throws. He will leave his mark in the record books as the all-time leader in assists (595) and 3-pointer made (206). He is second in free throws made (309) and wins (104), third in scoring (1,395), tied for fifth in games played (123), sixth in rebounds (546), eighth in steals (141) and ninth in 3-point field goal percentage (.420).
