Potlatch High School Teacher Receives Over $117,000 in Grant Funds to Reestablish Family & Consumer Science Classes

POTLATCH, ID – Potlatch Jr-Sr High School teacher Mackenna Sosa recently received two grants totaling over $117,000 for equipment needed to reestablish Family & Consumer Science classes at PHS, the school has announced.

The funding is expected to bring many exciting opportunities to Potlatch High School students and allow Potlatch Jr-Sr High School to completely remodel the kitchen classroom space with new appliances. In addition, students will have workstations for textiles and fifteen (15) brand new sewing machines to use!

Mrs. Sosa has partnered with Howard Hughes, Master’s Touch, Unlimited Plumbing, Gropp Electric and Quilting Bee for these improvements through guidance and suggestions from the state department.

Of the over $117,000 in funding, Sosa received $103,063.89 from the Leading Idaho Grant and an additional $14,518.88 was received through the Program & Quality Initiative Grant. Both grants are awarded through the Idaho Division of Career and Technical Education (IDCTE).

“Ms. Sosa is a fantastic teacher,” said Potlatch Jr-Sr High School Principal Doug Richards. “Our students are going to be able to engage with new and current hands-on machines and tools. This will be a beautiful space! Mrs. Nirk and Mrs. Sawyer, our previous teachers in this area, are also excited to extend their support and congratulations to Ms. Sosa and our students.”
