Gabby Petito

TETON COUNTY, WY - At a news conference held on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue announced his findings in the death of Gabby Petito. The coroner revealed that Gabby died three to four weeks before her body was found, with the cause of death being strangulation. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

Petito was originally reported missing by her family on September 11 after not returning home from a cross country trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Petitos remains were later found at a campground in the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on September 19.

According to the coroner, Petito's body "was outside for three to four weeks," before being found. When asked if he suspected Brian Laundrie to be a suspect, Blue declined to answer, saying that determination will be up to law enforcement.

By Wyoming state statue, no other information on the autopsy will be released.

On September 22, 2021, the U.S. District Court of Wyoming issued a federal arrest warrant for Brian Christopher Laundrie pursuant to a Federal Grand Jury indictment related to his activities following the death of Gabrielle Petito.

The indictment alleges a violation of federal statue 18 U.S.C 1029(a)(1): "Use of Unauthorized Access Devices" related to Mr. Laundries activities following the death of Gabreille Petito. The indictment alleges that Mr. Laundrie knowingly and with intent to defraud, used one or more Capitol One Bank debit cards in the District of Wyoming and elsewhere belonging to Petito after her presumed death. Laundrie is alleged to have obtained things of value aggregating to $1,000 or more during that period.

Laundrie is currently the only person of interest public identified in connection to Petito's death.

It is unclear at this time if the autopsy determination will lead to additional charges against Laundrie.

Police have been searching high and low for Laundrie since the body of Petito was discovered. Laundrie's parents have told authorities they last saw their son on September 13, two days after Petito was originally reported missing.
