SEATTLE - After two recent shootings, one deadly, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a Press Conference Monday that the city will move to dismantle the police-free zone known as the "Capitol Hill Organized Protest," or "CHOP" zone.
"Chief Best has made it clear to me that for the short term SPD will need the East Precinct to appropriately respond to more than 100,000 911 calls, said Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan. "SPD will be returning to the East Precinct, and we will do it peacefully and in the near future."
Protesters have been occupying the area around Cal Anderson Park and the police department's East Precinct on Capitol Hill, dubbing it the CHOP, since police left the site a couple of weeks ago following multiple nights of clashes between officers and demonstrators during protests against police brutality.
Mayor Jenny Durkan stated, "It's time for people to go home."
