COLTON, WA - At about 1:00 a.m. Saturday, a wildfire was reported near Wawawai Road, west of Colton, on the breaks of the Snake River north of Wawawai County Park, according to the Whitman County Sheriff's Office.
The Wawawai Canyon Fire is burning in grasses and brush. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources at 5:30 a.m. Saturday at the request of Whitman County Fire District 12 Fire Chief Lester Erwin.
The fire is estimated at 150 acres and growing. It is threatening structures, range land, crop land, and Wawawai County Park. The fire cause is currently under investigation. Officials say mobilization specialists from the Fire Protection Bureau have ordered one strike team and air support.
The Whitman County Sheriff's Office says fire crews from Colton, Uniontown, Pullman, Albion, Colfax and Palouse were working on the fire as of Saturday morning.
Whitman County Emergency Management is also on scene assisting the fire districts. As of the time of this report, there were no road closures in the area.
