BOISE - The Idaho State Tax Commission is alerting taxpayers of a new tax scam after an individual recently received a “Notice of Intent to Levy Assets” in the mail.
The mailing claims to be from the State of Idaho’s “Tax Processing Unit - Ada County Public Judgment Records.” The unit doesn’t exist. The fraudulent letter threatens enforcement action — like seizing assets — if the taxpayer's debt isn't resolved quickly.
This scam resembles other scams the Tax Commission has seen that use the county where the targeted taxpayer lives as the location of the fraudulent tax unit. Scammers try to make the mailing seem more official.
The scammers are getting public information about taxpayers that’s available online.
If you’re concerned about the legitimacy of a tax document you receive, please call the Tax Commission — not the phone number provided in the mailing — and verify that it’s from us. You can call us at (208) 334-7660 in the Boise area or toll free at (800) 972-7660.
