MOSCOW - Gritman Medical Center/Moscow Family Medicine’s Sports Medicine Clinic is now offering teen and adolescent wellness exams with sports physicals.
Annual adolescent and teen wellness exams, which are covered by most insurance programs, including Medicaid, are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for all children age 5 and older and are much more thorough than simple sports physicals. The exam includes a complete physical examination of your child from head to toe. Our providers also take time to visit with your child about conditions and issues that teens and adolescents commonly face.
"We really want to take some time and talk to them about things like sexual health, drug use, their mood and their risk for depression and anxiety. We want to talk about these things early and before they become a problem," said Dr. Jacob Christensen, a sports medicine physician at Gritman|MFM. “You won't get that in a typical sports physical. If you are in line with 50 people in a gym and do sports physicals, you are not going to be able to address all of those things that are really, really common and significant problems for teenagers."
Student-athletes must have completed a sports physical to compete in school athletics. Call 208-882-2011 to schedule a wellness exam with a sports physical now to avoid the fall rush.
"You don't have to wait until your season is about to start to get your wellness exam with a sports physical,” Dr. Christensen said. “Even the winter sports like basketball, they can get them done now to be ready to go for their season."
